Make them a little bit more visible
The Gerda Henkel Foundation was founded in June, 1976, by Lisa Maskell in memory of her mother, Gerda Henkel, as a private, non-profit making, grant awarding organisation dedicated to fostering research in the humanities. The Foundation focuses on the support of academic projects and PhD scholarships, primarily in the fields of History, Art History, Archaeology, and the History of Islam. The Foundation has its headquarters in Düsseldorf, and is active in Germany and abroad.
Following a generational change on the Board of Trustees, our task was to revise the foundation's branding and make it more visible to the public.
How should it look like
The design strikes the right balance between the necessary restraint and publicity. Typography, word mark and the identifying colour yellow form the basis for the branding. Sub-brands were created for series of events, initiatives and the biennial award ceremony.
The result is a clear position in the foundation landscape, the brand design takes a clear stance and creates an identity that corresponds to the scientific orientation of the foundation.

The annual report
The Foundation's annual report is the medium in which not only figures are reported. Rather, it offers space for a lively presentation of the Foundation's work. Thanks to the digital expansion since 2016, research projects or events can be presented on a larger scale and in multimedia formats. This provides in-depth access to the research work, events and initiatives supported. They become more vivid and tangible through videos, photo galleries and interviews.
The annual report is published as a traditional print brochure and as a digital publication.
Branding for the foundation's initiatives as sub-brands
L.I.S.A. Das Wissenschaftsportal of the Gerda Henkel Foundation
L.I.S.A. is one of the sub-brands of the Gerda Henkel Foundation. The interactive and multimedia portal L.I.S.A. offers researchers in the historical humanities an online platform for exchange, collaboration and networking.
Scholars from the national and international community are invited to participate in dossiers, expert chats and online lectures, with conference reports, book reviews, event reports or podcasts. The portal includes text, image and film elements. The publications on the portal are accessible to everyone free of charge.
We are responsible for the concept and site architecture, UI/UX, user management for several thousand users.
The Gerda Henkel Prize
The Gerda Henkel Foundation has been awarding the Gerda Henkel Prize since 2006.
We are responsible for the concept, interior design, design of the initiative box and accompanying documents/brochures for the award ceremony, invitation technology, event equipment and event management.
The foundation uses PLEXFRAME.invite, our in-house CMS, to organize the invitation management for the guests.
A haptic experience for digital publications
With a classic postcard and a QR code, we raise awareness of the foundation's projects in a haptic way and promote the dissemination of research work as a digital EDIT. publication or on L.I.S.A.
